New mural for Canning Town unveiled at Hallsville Quarter

Property development company Linkcity, the London Borough of Newham, and Global Street Art, the UK’s leading mural painting organisation, have unveiled a new large-scale piece of typographic street art at Hallsville Quarter in London’s Canning Town.

The mural, entitled ‘From The Ground Up’, was developed by artist Gary Stranger in conjunction with year 5 pupils from Hallsville Primary School in Radland Road, who took part in a design workshop last November. Featuring eight-metre high blue lettering set against a yellow background, the 350 sq m piece is one of the largest murals in the city and creates a striking new local landmark for Newham.

From The Ground Up is the latest public element of the Hallsville Quarter project to complete, following on from the new high street delivered as part of the second phase of this major regeneration scheme and Terry Spinks Place, which has seen the transformation of a previously unloved and forgotten space under the A13 flyover into a meeting place and outdoor event space for the local community.

The mural marks the start of an exciting new era for street art across London, with the launch of the first ever London Mural Festival, which will take place in September next year. Over two weeks from 1 September 2020, the festival will offer a programme of activities and will set out to use the capital as a vast canvas, painting a minimum of 20 new large-scale murals across the city. The festival, organised by Global Street Art, will showcase art from local, national and international talent, celebrate creative communities across the city, and introduce a new way for people to experience one of the world’s biggest art movements.
